In my go to list you’ll find the book Made to Crave by Lysa TerKeurst. It was first published in 2010 and had been recommended to me for quite some time. But I’m not an avid reader and the list of recommended books I have collected is long. (Yup, THAT’s an excuse!) I really loved the book and I heartily recommend it to anyone who has struggled not just with health and weight, but with the deeper question of why can’t I do this?
Among the many great lessons of the book, at least for me, was the idea that my suspicions were right, I alone cannot do this. I am not enough.
I am not enough
What a strangely comforting statement that is. I might not have thought that at age 13, or even 23 but now, facing 60, it really makes sense. What a relief to accept this fact in the proper context. Certainly, as a child of God and I am enough in the sense that I am known and loved by him and others. I’m enough in that I can approach the throne of grace with confidence (Hebrews 4:16). But let’s also be clear, I am not enough to withstand the temptations of this world on my own…for very long. I am not enough to figure this out, to beat this thing, to walk away. But thank God,
I am not alone!
What about you? Do you find comfort and relief in "I am not enough"? Do you have another mantra that brings you peace? If so, please share it.
